Councillors and council employees of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent are encouraged to apply for scholarships to assist them in further study, research, or professional development.
The Cr Pat Dixon Scholarship program, facilitated by LGNSW, is named in honour of the first Aboriginal woman elected as a councillor in NSW.
Cr Dixon served as an elected representative, including Deputy Mayor, in the Armidale community and is remembered as a trailblazer for advancing female Aboriginal representation in the local government sector.
This scholarship is offered annually through the Pat Dixon Memorial Scholarship Trust. It aims to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councillors and staff with financial assistance of up to $5,000 to help them pursue further study, research, or professional development.
The scholarship can be used for course fees or associated costs.
The Cr Pat Dixon Memorial Trust members, named in her honour, determine the winners of the Cr Pat Dixon Memorial Scholarship.
Last year’s scholarship winners were Cr Yvonne Weldon from City of Sydney and Joshua Staines from Penrith City Council.
For more details and to apply for a chance to receive the scholarship, applicants should go to the LGNSW website.
Applications are due by Thursday 2 May 2024.
