A small chip in your windscreen might seem minor, but if you leave it untreated, it can weaken the glass and lead to serious damage. The good news? You can fix it yourself with the UFIXIT Windscreen Repair Kit. Made by Aussies, for Aussies, this kit handles multiple chip repairs and delivers a permanent result that even strengthens your windscreen. Specially designed for DIY use, it restores strength and visibility while stopping the chip from spreading, all with the patented tools included in the UFIXIT kit.
What You’ll Need:
- Ufixit Windscreen Repair Kit
- Clean, dry cloth
- Glass cleaner (avoid using directly on the chip)
- A shaded area to work (avoid direct sunlight)
Important: What’s the Difference Between a Chip and a Crack?
Before you begin, it’s essential to identify what type of damage you’re repairing. Here is a simple guide to help you.
- Chips and Bull’s Eyes: These appear as circular or star shaped damage. This type of damage is trapped between the layers of laminated glass in the windscreen and is only accessible using the impact point on the outside surface of the glass. Repairing Chips and Bulls’s Eyes requires the applicator device to inject resin deep into the damage under pressure.
- Cracks or Star Cracks: These usually appear as surface damage that spreads across the windscreen. When repairing you simply apply the resin directly along the crack’s surface. You DON’T need the applicator device for Crack repairs.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Chip Repairs
- Clean the Area
Use a clean cloth to gently wipe the glass around the chip. You may use a glass cleaner, but do not apply any chemicals directly to the damaged area, as this can affect the end result of your repair.
- Position the Applicator
Place the applicator base over the chip, making sure the ring is centred directly on the impact point. Then, screw the resin chamber into the applicator base until the rubber seal gently touches the windscreen.
- Add resin
Add 4 to 5 drops of resin into the resin chamber.
- Injecting Resin into the Damage
Insert the plunger into the resin chamber and screw it down slowly to create pressure. This forces the resin deep into the chip, filling all cracks and air pockets. Leave it for at least 10 minutes to allow the resin to fully penetrate into the damage.
- Remove the Plunger
Unscrew and remove the plunger to release the pressure and let the trapped air escape. Repeat steps 4 and 5 (unscrew and rescue the plunger) until all the air is gone and the damage is no longer visible. Once the damage is no longer visible, remove the applicator base and resin chamber.
- Apply Curing Strip
Once the damage is no longer visible, remove the applicator base and resin chamber. Add a drop of resin to the impact point and place a curing strip over the repaired area. No pressure is necessary when applying the curing strip.
- Curing the Resin
Move the vehicle into direct sunlight and allow the UV rays to harden the resin. This should take about 10 minutes, even on an overcast day.
- Remove hardened Resin
Once the resin has cured, peel off the curing strip and use the included razor blade to scrape away any excess resin. Hold the razor blade at a 90° angle for a smooth, clean finish.
- Final Clean
Wipe the area clean with a soft cloth.
Congratulations, your windscreen’s structural strength is now restored, and the original damage will no longer spread.
