Harbord Diggers to host biggest 2UP in Sydney

Freshwater’s beloved Harbord Diggers is set to host its annual game of two-up on Thursday, 25 April, as part of its ANZAC Day commemorations. Renowned as Sydney’s biggest two-up game, this gathering holds special significance as a tribute to the sacrifices of our servicemen and women, with a portion of ticket sales to be donated to Wounded Heroes Australia.

Nestled amidst the scenic landscape of Freshwater’s headland on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the two-up game will be hosted across the Ocean Terrace and Lumsdaine Drive, offering attendees exclusive access to designated bars, food and seating. From 12pm to 6pm, guests can participate in the two-up game hosted by ringmaster Matty ‘V’ Vandenbergh.

To attend the commemoration, attendees must secure a club membership and a $10 ticket for the event. Those wishing to attend can purchase tickets online on the Harbord Diggers website.

“Two-up is more than just a game, it’s a living tribute to our ANZACs and their enduring legacy. It’s a privilege to provide a space where our community can come together, share stories and pay homage to those who have served our country,” said Mounties Group President John Dean.

Originating in the trenches of World War I and later popularised by returned servicemen, two-up has become an integral part of Australian culture. For Harbord Diggers, founded by a group of World War I servicemen on Freshwater Beach, ANZAC Day holds profound significance.

Beyond offering Sydney-siders the opportunity to participate in one of the city’s largest two-up games, this event serves as a meaningful way to honour and support past and present veterans.

Ticket sales will help support Wounded Heroes Australia, a charity organisation dedicated to providing crisis support to current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force veterans and their families. Through practical assistance, the organisation strives to alleviate financial, emotional and personal hardships faced by those who have bravely served our nation.

“Beyond the spirit of the game itself, the ANZAC Day two-up event at Harbord Diggers is a meaningful opportunity to support our veterans,” added Mr Dean.

“With a portion of ticket sales dedicated to Wounded Heroes Australia, attendees not only participate in a cherished tradition but also contribute to providing vital assistance to those who have served our country,” he concluded.

Aside from the two-up game, Harbord Diggers will host a family-friendly ANZAC Day commemoration service from 8am. The morning service commences with a march, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and performances. Following the ceremony, children will not be permitted entry into Harbord Diggers from 11am.
