Kylie Jenner’s nail glam may be an Instagram hit, but do glossy, manicured nails hide a dirty secret?
New research published in American Journal of Infection Control reveals that gel nail polish may retain bacteria on healthcare workers’ fingers, even after using alcohol hand gel.
Researchers painted healthcare workers’ nails with standard polish, gel polish, and left some nails unpainted, then measured levels of bacterial contamination over a 14 day period.
An evaluation of over 700 bacterial cultures showed that all nail types became more contaminated over time, regardless of nail product applied.
Gel nails retained the most bacteria after cleaning with alcohol hand gel, and the study authors suggest that nail outgrowth associated with gel polish may create crevices that make sanitizing nails more difficult.
