Sutherland Shire Mayor, Carmelo Pesce, together with Attorney General and Cronulla MP Mark Speakman, representatives from Sydney South Hockey Association and our Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) partners Frasers Property and Breen, officially opened the Marang Parklands Hockey Fields at Greenhills.
The $5.3 million project, set to rival all others across the state, was funded in part by Sutherland Shire Council, Frasers Property, Breen, the NSW Government, and Sydney South Hockey Association.
“It’s been a real partnership approach to facility development,” said Sutherland Shire Mayor, Carmelo Pesce.
“Council knows that sport is a key part of our local culture and identity and that’s why I’m so pleased to be here, supporting our sporting community and opening this great new facility for hockey.”
The fields complete Stage 1B of the Marang Parklands VPA.
“I’m pleased the NSW Government has contributed $700,000 to this important local project.
“Investing in this local sports infrastructure helps improve community health and lifestyles, as well as future sporting successes,” Mr Speakman said.
Sydney South Hockey Association President, Lyn Smith says SSHA is extremely excited about the Marang Parklands Hockey Fields.
“We have been working closely with Council for many years to ensure that we have the facilities we need to grow hockey in the Sutherland Shire,” she said.
“Sydney South Hockey Association is very appreciative of the support provided by Sutherland Shire Council and the NSW Government to make the Marang Parklands Hockey Fields possible.
“The facilities allow us to grow the sport locally and to also host State Championships.
“Hockey players from across NSW will now come to the Shire to play at the best fields in the state.”
Marang Parklands, formerly known as Greenhills Parklands, was renamed in consultation with local indigenous representatives and the community to recognise and acknowledge the Dharawal language as the first language in the Sutherland Shire.
The word ‘Marang’ meaning ‘Sandhill’, recognises the historical landscape of the area.
Over the next five years, through the VPA and completion of stages 2 and 3, the area of Marang Parklands will set a benchmark in NSW by contributing up to 30 million dollars value to the community, through a transformation into 91 hectares of parklands, 10 playing fields and a skate park.
The already completed and extremely popular Skate Parks accompanies a full sized football fields that was opened as part of ‘Stage 1A’.
These Hockey fields will see regional visitors to the area and it will be home to Hockey for at least the next 21 years.
