From fortune-telling treats to festive cocktails, Sydney’s most loved restaurants, cafes and bars will celebrate 2018 Chinese New Year with an inspired range of food and drinks.
The sweet and savory snacks available exclusively from 8 February 2018 to 8 March 2018 will offer diners a fitting way to celebrate the Year of the treat-loving Dog.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said that Chinese New Year festivities often saw a boom in demand for contemporary and traditional Asian delicacies across Sydney.
“With some of Sydney’s top Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai restaurants taking part in events across the city, there’ll be plenty of treats for Sydneysiders to enjoy this Chinese New Year Festival,” the Lord Mayor said.
“The Lunar New Year celebrations are a great time to get out and explore our wonderful city, make the most of many festival and community events and welcome good fortune for the coming year.”

Sydney Opera House
The Opera House’s restaurants will offer a range of festive meals for Chinese New Year. Visitors can indulge in steamed scallops with lemongrass, ginger & soy and prawn and sesame toast at Opera Bar, to Shanghai braised pork belly with steamed fragrant rice at Portside Sydney and a variety of dumplings at The Lounge.
From beef rendang and chili jam stir fry to sago dessert, authentic Asian delicacies will be on offer at AYAM’s Malaysian food truck. Experience a taste of the east opposite Ferry Wharf 2, East Circular Quay from 5pm to 10pm on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 February.

AYAM’s tuk tuk will be at Customs House on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 February from 5 to 10pm, at Chinatown’s Dixon Street Mall on Sunday 18 and Sunday 25 February from 12pm to 7pm, and Pitt Street Mall on Saturday 24 February from 11am to 4pm.
During the Dragon Boat Races at Darling Harbour on Saturday 24 February, the AYAM drinks stall will offer visitors and participants $1 coconut water.
From 16 February to 4 March, Gelato Messina at Circular Quay will premiere a limited edition gelato flavor for Chinese New Year.
Din Tai Fung
From 8 February to 8 March, Taiwanese dumpling experts Din Tai Fung at World Square will steam-to-order dog-shaped sweet buns.
Decorated with brown spotted ears and wagging red tongues, this limited edition version of a Chinese New Year staple is filled with molten dark chocolate and banana.
Din Tai Fung will pass on your smiles by donating $1 from each of these $4.80 buns to leading children’s mental health charity Be Centre in support of 3 to 12 year olds experiencing emotional, behavioral, or psychological difficulties.
Celebrate Chinese New Year with a taste of Paris from Thursday 8 February to Sunday 18 February at Ladurée. The luxury French bakery in Sydney Westfield, will offer a Chinese New Year high tea featuring sweet and savory bites, finger sandwiches and macarons, and comes with a complimentary gift bag with a gold leaf macaron and ruby red Michael Kors perfume.

KOI Dessert Bar and Monkey’s Corner
Eat your way to good fortune with KOI Dessert Bar’s Prosperity Ball, available for a limited time at 46 Kensington Street, Chippendale. Indulge in affordable fine-dining for $15 at this Kensington Street favourite, with strawberry and lychee mousse, popping candy, black sesame sponge, cocoa and almond sable enclosed in a raspberry sphere.
KOI owners Arnold, Ronald, and Reynold Poernomo (Masterchef 2015’s ‘Dessert King’) will also play ode to their Chinese-Indonesian heritage at their inventive bar Monkey’s Corner. The intimate bar at 40 Kensington Street will be shaking up plantation pineapple rum, mandarin shrub, lemon juice, and egg whites in the ‘Don’t Speak Mandarin’ cocktail.
Black Star Pastry
Christopher Thé’s Black Star Pastry will bring a refreshing taste of fragrance to the variety of traditional Asian cuisine on showcase at the Chinese New Year Lantern Festival. Dubbed Australia’s most photographed cake, pastry chef Thé’s signature strawberry watermelon cake is layered with almond dacquoise, rose-scented cream, watermelon, pistachios and dried rose petals.
Based on the same highly sought-after recipe, Black Star’s sell-out strawberry watermelon cake soft serve will return to Tumbalong Park from 10am to 10pm on Thursday 22 to Monday 26 February.
