Inner city residents are invited to head to Harmony Park in Surry Hills for a free barbecue to support the aspirations of same-sex couples and celebrate the diversity of Sydney’s local communities.
The City of Sydney will host the free ‘Vote Yes’ sausage sizzle to promote equality, resilience and diversity as part of its long running program of spring neighbourhood BBQ events.
The event, which will feature live performances by local musicians and children’s entertainment, aims to bring together local residents and strengthen bonds within the LGBTIQ community.
“The City is delighted to host this event in support of our LGBTIQ community who is at risk of discrimination and social isolation with current public debate on marriage equality,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.
“The City supports the aspirations of same-sex couples to have their commitment to each other recognised and valued.
“I would encourage everyone to come along and bring their family, friends and even their four-legged friends to show their support for marriage equality.”
The BBQ will provide the LGBTIQ community with an inclusive environment to get to know their community, receive safety and security advice from police and learn more about LGBTIQ initiatives and projects in the area.
Also participating in the event will be Australian Marriage Equality, ACON, NSW Police Force, Twenty10, Mardi Gras, Gender Centre, OII Australia, Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Rainbow Families, Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby and Inner City Legal Centre.
The ‘Vote Yes’ community event and BBQ will take place on Saturday 7 October 2017 from 11am–4pm.
